Soil Sunrise Orchid Potting Mix; Soilless Media for Orchid Growing
Soil Sunrise, a brand born in 2020 out of a desire to share a heritage of hobby gardening with the world, is dedicated to providing affordable, hand-blended specialty soils and quality soil supplements for the discerning grower. Founder Andrew Pennington, raised in a family of gardeners, teamed up with good friend Kyle Holman at the beginning of the pandemic with a purpose - to spread the joy of greenhouse and container cultivation with everyone. Your plants deserve the best, and Soil Sunrise's small team of dedicated professionals pours care and quality into every product.
The Soil Sunrise Orchid Potting Mix is a blend of their special horticulture grade charcoal, perlite (sponge rock), and pine bark. This general purpose mix has been tested with both their personal and retail collections, and it works well without causing root issues. The combination allows for excellent drainage and aeration to the roots, as well as nutrient retention.
Charcoal increases the soilless medium's ability to hold onto plant nutrients and beneficial soil microbes by slowing or reducing the leaching of nutrients by rain or watering. The ingredients include fir bark, horticultural charcoal, and perlite.
As a general rule, orchids are light-hungry plants. For best results, they should get 12 to 14 hours of light each day, year-round. In a tropical environment, the duration and intensity of natural light does not vary as it does in temperate climates. For this reason, you may need to move your orchids around and supplement with artificial light to keep them happy during the winter months.
When it comes to potting, it's important not to repot while a plant is flowering, as the blooms may suffer. Enjoy the flowers, then cut off the spent flower spike with sterile snippers and repot the orchid. When an orchid spills out of its pot, the roots trail down the sides of the pot, or the growing medium is reduced to crumbs, it's time for repotting. Repot at the beginning of the next growth cycle (typically in the spring).
Orchids should be so snug in their pots that you can pick up the plant by its leaves and not shake out the roots.
The Soil Sunrise Orchid Potting Mix is 100% natural and specially formulated for use as a substrate for growing healthy orchids in indoor or outdoor container gardening. Its benefits include nutrient retention, aeration, and drainage.
The product comes in a 2-quart size, which is enough for three 5-inch pots or two 6-inch pots.
